Is a Piece Worth Reupholstering?
It’s no big surprise that most things today aren’t made with the high standards as items were in years past. You may be wondering what good candidates for reupholstery are and which pieces of furniture are not. We have five guidelines that can be helpful when deciding if you want to take the route of upholstery for your furniture.
1. Are you in love with the style of the piece? If you like the pitch of the back, the arms, and other more permanent components of a chair or loveseat but not the fabric, you should consider having it reupholstered. You should also consider how the piece's size fits your stature. A chair made for a person shorter in height cannot be enlarged for a taller person while maintaining the original quality.
2. Do you have the perfect spot for the piece already chosen in your home? Perhaps you have a settee that looks stunning on a landing but is too tattered for show. In this case, we suggest contacting us to check out some new upholstery fabric to breathe fresh life into your treasures.
3. Does the furniture have sentimental value? A few decades ago, furnishings were generally made with solid wood frames that last much longer than current pressboard pieces. So even if a chair doesn’t match your existing decor or preferred style but is an heirloom with a solid structure, it’s definitely worth the investment of upholstery.
4. Our fourth guideline ties in with our third. Is the furniture worth the time and money spent to reupholster it regardless of how you feel about it? Good candidates for reupholstery have solid wood frames and eight-way hand-tied coil spring construction. Another indicator of a great piece is integral legs that are part of the frame and not added post-production. Plywood construction is easy to recognize. You can feel the thin layer beneath the arms of a piece and the legs are generally screwed in the base and become loose frequently.
