What to Expect

Consultations of any kind involve getting to know you and your needs and wants. Design consultations allow our designers to see your space and begin the conceptual process. We will discuss what is and isn’t currently working for you and your lifestyle.

What is Space Planning?

Part of an interior designer’s job is to make spaces that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. Rooms need to have proper flow in order to be useful and enjoyable. You can’t entertain guests in a room where you’ll be bumping in other people or furniture anytime you move around.

Preparing for the Consultation

As with any significant project, the more you put into the process, the more you will get out of it. Being prepared will allow you to make more progress during your designer consultation, which will save you time and money.

  1. Know what your goals are for the project. Are you planning to stay in the home for several years, or are you flipping a property for a quick sale? This information helps us to decide if we should suggest more budget-friendly items for a quick resale or upscale products for your family to enjoy.
  2. Determining your budget is another crucial aspect of preparing for your consultation. We can help you with the final details, but we’ll need to know how much you are comfortable spending on the project. It’s also helpful to know how you will move forward if your anticipated budget falls short of project completion. Will you compromise on the design or choose to upgrade in stages?
  3. Consider how you use the spaces you’re designing. Our designers will have different ideas for a formal sitting room than for a casual family room.
  4. Please be specific about your needs. We won’t judge you if you need flooring that hides dirt well or window treatments that don’t need involved upkeep. Even small details, like the location of the towel bar in your primary bathroom, should be mentioned if you want it changed.
  5. It is also useful to have a timeframe in mind. Do you need the project completed ASAP, or are you ok with it taking more time?

We Have Questions, Too!

A designer consultation is an exchange of information and ideas. First, we need to know who is responsible for the final decision making. Is this a solo project or do you have a spouse or partner who will be taking part? We will be better able to serve your needs if we know everyone involved in the process. Another question we ask is what you consider to be expensive or inexpensive? In order to work withing your set budget we need to know what your ideal price range is for furniture, floor coverings, accessories, and anything else we will be designing. Your dislikes are just as important as your likes, so we’ll inquire about those, as well. Knowing what syles, patterns, and colors you absolutely do not want will help us narrow down your choices. If you are attached to any existing furnishings or decor items let us know so we can work those into our design.

Interior Decorator vs. Interior Designer

Aren’t those the same thing? While the terms are often used interchangeably there is a difference between the two. An interior decorator helps to finish a space with art and other accents. An interior designer is integral in creating the space and follows through until it is complete. Think of an interior designer as an event planner for your home’s interior. Your designer will ensure the project moves along as scheduled and stays within budget.
